Gorgeous and I went to see Pirates of the Caribbean last night. I don’t often go to see movies on opening weekend because I’m not so much into crowds but a number of factors converged and out we went.
The original idea was to catch a matinee and then some dinner. But even with 6 or so screens showing the movie here in Savannah shows were sold out about 3 hours in advance so we bought our tickets and then went to the Macaroni Grill for some eats.
The movie was fun. Not great. Not quite as good as the first one, I thought. As we were walking out Gorgeous asked me what I thought. On a ten scale I gave it about a 4.5. It looks like they are planning on making three movies in this series. The first one stands on its own but this one needs the third a little too much. I suspect the third film will be a much more satisfying movie going experience than this one was.
Gorgeous said that the movie was a bit too “slimy” for her tastes. Looking at the way they chose to portray Davy Jones and his crew, she’s got a good point.
The second movie didn’t have as much of the great dialogue and banter that the first had. And it seems they tried to make it up with more action scenes. Fortunately they kept the humor flowing only they used the context of the action and sight gags more than the dialogue.
That may work better for some, but I’m a word man. I go for the witty dialogue.
The best exchange that I remember from last night is when Elizabeth tells Captain Jack that, “There will come a moment when you will have the chance to do the right thing.”
To which Captain Jack responds with his usual Devil-may-care attitude, “I love those moments. I like to wave at them as they pass by.”
And that seemed to be the central theme of the movie to me: Doing the right thing. Several of the characters face decisions through out the film. Some make good choices and others don’t. Some stay true to our expectations of them and some surprise us.
Sort of like real life.
Most of us face moments when we struggle with that very issue our whole lives. Even Paul struggled with that sort of thing himself. He said
I don’t understand myself at all, for I really want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I do the very thing I hate.
From that perspective he had quite a bit in common with the characters in the Pirates of the Caribbean. I think most of us do too.

OK – it’s official – when I die (either via natural causes or because I provoke my edition of Gorgeous one too many times) I want to come back as you. Well, assuming that “It is appointed to a man once to die and then judgement.” thing isn’t as true as we believe. But, hey, why let a couple of Bible verses get in the way of a cool idea, right??
Anyway – Chris – you rock! Is there nothing that you can’t look at and pull a Kingdom application out of? Let’s see, we have drunk driving, fighting with your wife, pornography, work and rainstorms in just the last few days … Only the good Lord knows where we’ll go from here!
Seriously, I really enjoy the way you look at life. Keep on looking and telling us what ya’ see, boy! It’s good fer what ails us …
Blesssings,
Ken
Ken, Your comment got eaten up by my Askimet spam catcher for some reason. I don’t know why. It just gets hungry from time to time. But I just fed it so it would let your comment out…
I should consider putting you on retainer! You are way too good for my ego. Thanks for your over-the-top kind words. I really just call things as I see them and it is really a bit surprising to me sometimes that folks take the time to read it.
One of the things I love about you, Chris, is that you understand that “all truth is God’s truth” whether it’s being presented from a pulpit or from a pirate movie. I appreciate your take on the flick and I’m looking forward to catching it myself. My 16 year-old daughter, by the way, had the same take you did (good, not great – too slimy – not as good as the first).
Tom, there are definitely some things in life that I hope I never lose a 16-year-old perspective on.
I guess, philosophically speaking, I see truth as simply existing. Just because a principle is in action somewhere other than church doesn’t make it any less (or any more) true. That’s why I choose to write about the weird subject matter of Practical Life Philosophy. Any philosophy that can’t be (or isn’t) practically applied is nothing but a bunch of wasted words.
Too many today see Jesus and the Bible as irrelevant. I think that is because we have worked so hard to convince ourselves (and others) that Truth can only be found in the church house not in everyday life. And I think we’ve missed the mark horribly there.
Hey Chris,
glad I found your blog again. Of course I forgot to write the address down when you mentioned a few weeks ago that you had switched.
Blog looks great and the content is top notch as always … but I think you already got 2 major (ego)boosters in your comments.
Thanks also for an honest opinion on the PotC movie … I too will have to go see it and take the missus with me. By the way, there are indeed 3 movies and they were filming the vast majority of 2 and 3 while shooting for the first one
Hope to talk to you soon, and in case I forget to call you tomorrow. Here is an early HAPPY BIRTHDAY from us up here in Mount P …
Oliver
Hey, Ollie! Thanks for stopping by. Geeze! It’s a banner day. You’d think today was my birthday, not tomorrow!
