[...] Then this morning I woke up and found that a lady had sent me a message. She had read my post the other day on Mel Gibson’s indiscretion and asked how she could help a friend of hers who struggles with alcoholism. I’m not sure I have any answers for her.
Brad, Interesting read. Even though it is a long article, the author brings up some thought provoking points. Thanks for sharing it.

Yeah, David. Slow to speak and quick to listen is often best. The stuff he apparently said is inexcusable and he'll still have to deal with the consequences of saying it.

Just the same I'll cut him some slack because I understand a little about the alcohol struggle.

People will always be quick to judge especly someone with celebrity status.
I believe that we all have the potential inside of us for destruction.
I just pray for Mel and his family that God would give them strength and curage to make it through this ordeal.

Dave, when it comes to situations like this I try to view it with <a href="http://bibleresources.bible.com/passagesearchresults.php?passage1=1 Corinthians 4:5&passage2=&passage3=&passage4=&passage5=&version1=51&version2=65&version3=31&version4=49&version5=45&Submit.x=45&Submit.y=15" rel="nofollow">this perspective:</a>
<blockquote>So be careful not to jump to conclusions before the Lord returns as to whether or not someone is faithful. When the Lord comes, he will bring our deepest secrets to light and will reveal our private motives. And then God will give to everyone whatever praise is due.</blockquote>

I don't always manage it, mind you. But that is the attitude I try to keep.

I've been in a similar position although it was in a high school context and it never translated into adulthood. I got saved and freed from the alcoholic life. I drank to numb the pain of my father's alchoholism... nice work eh?

I feel even worse for Mel, because of his professed faith. That's a hard one to admit (although clearly he has no choice). I've found situations like these where, as a know Christian, when we publically fail... it can be even MORE of an opportunity to share the love of God with the world.

The world looks at us as people who are trying to be perfect and we can come across as pompous. Not neccessarily our fault but it's a by-product of trying to live a Holy life. But admitting to the world that the only real difference is that we're accepting the forgiveness that Jesus brings, paving the way to have the FREEDOM TO CHOOSE not to sin, it actually shows us as human and it can be a relatable moment with others.

I feel bad for Mel, but at all times when you're walking with Jesus, your life a process that God uses for His Glory, His Name and His Renown, and I suspect that God has a larger plan for Mel because of it.
