Driving With the Brakes On

Ever see someone driving down the road for miles with their brake lights on?

Last night I was out and about and saw no less than three different cars doing it. One even passed me, brake lights glaring back at me the whole way.

That can’t be good for the car. Or their fuel economy.

Do you suppose people who do this know they have their foot on the brake? Do they realize they are making things harder on their car and wasting energy?

Brake LightsIt made me wonder how many times I go racing through life, fighting against unnecessary friction because I have my foot on the brake pedal.

I know one of the ways I slow myself down is with the constant stream of counterproductive thoughts. I have a tendency to look for all the reasons why something won’t work instead of focusing on how it could work. Or what good might come from it if it did work.

That thinking isn’t helping me.

The Bible says I should chuck those thought patterns. Check this out

Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will know what God wants you to do, and you will know how good and pleasing and perfect his will really is.

Everyone of us needs a mental enema from time to time to get rid of that stinking thinking that holds back from our full potential.

How are your thoughts holding you back?

That is one good question, Chris. And how wondersome the ways of the Lord are sometimes (or how coincindental when you fall into those bad thoughts again).
Our men’s smallgroup is studying a book by A.R. Torrey about the Holy Spirit, and it was my turn to prepare the study for tomorrow’s chapters. Now that I am reading this latest posting, I did come across some more food for thought along the lines of your post.
What would our potential be, if we got rid of those negative thoughts, and instead remembered that God gave us the Holy Spirit to dwell in our hears, not only to be that nagging voice inside of you, when you do step into that trap of sin again, but to be our Comforter, to be our ever present friend that will take a stand between us and any danger, that bears the responsibility and let’s us step out of the way to become the tool that God designed us to be?

I can only echo that question, and hope that the next time I come across a negative thought myself, I remember to call on the Holy Spirit, to be there for me.

Yeah, Ollie. And I’m getting kinda tired of having all this unmet potential. I’m at the point where I want to grow into that potential.

Do you think that’s an unrealistic desire?

I don’t believe that is unrealistic at all. And it usually “ONLY” requires three “SIMPLE” things: faith, obedience and patience.
Just be aware, you are praying one of those dangerous prayers. One of the prayers that once granted, can blow your socks off and put you somewhere you would have never expected, doing things you would have never imagined being capable off.
It’s indeed one of those dangerously awesome prayers.
The final thing for the recipe would be to step out of the way and let God take over control 100%, all the way.
So, I’ll be praying for you, my friend :)

Simple but not easy, eh? I’m with you on that.
