A Discombobulated Day

Did you ever have one of those days?

I don’t mean a day where everything goes wrong. Just one of those days where nothing seems to quite get moving along in the right direction. A day where you feel like you are simply drifting and don’t have the power to get yourself back on course.

Yesterday was a day like that for me.

It started when the phone rang at oh-dark-thirty. It was my boss. A ship that we expected to arrive later in the day had arrived at the dock and we needed to have someone out there right away. Could I get out there?

It wasn’t really a request.

So I got up, put on some coffee, splashed some water on my face, got dressed and headed out the door. Gorgeous helped me out by getting up and putting together something for my lunch. (Did I marry up, or what?!)

By the time I finished with the ship it was just about time for the normal work day to start so I just went over to the office.

The phone call wasn’t that much earlier than I usually get up.

Yet somehow busting up my normal morning routine seemed to throw me off for the entire day. I never really found my rhythm.

A Bad DayWork was busy. I got things done. But I never felt I was being as productive as I wanted to be.

It was not like I was overly stressed or in danger like the guy in the picture here. (I really hope it is a Photshop job!)

I just had a discombobulated day yesterday. I’m glad today is starting out better.

Fear and Death

I’ve been saying it for years. Unfortunately this weekend I was shown to be right.

I don’t feel good about it at all.

Years ago I said, “One day that Crocodile Hunter guy is going to get too close to some nasty creature that is going to kill him. And the cameras will be rolling as he dies.”

Crocodile HunterThat is exactly what happened to Steve Irwin this weekend.

Apparently he was filming an encounter with a stingray when it flicked its tail into his chest. The stinger went right to his heart.

His death is all the more tragic, not only because it was senseless and entirely preventable, but because it was so very predictable. We can discuss how relatively safe stingrays are and how few people are actually killed by them until the cows come home. But that misses the larger point of the pattern of behavior that totally tempted the odds which were heavily stacked against him.

We are all wired with certain healthy fears which help us to live longer and have better lives. Steve either ignored his fears or didn’t have them in the first place. The results speak for themselves.

There are some who will try to lesson the tragedy by saying things like, “Well at least he died doing something he loved.” But I’d be willing to wager that if he knew when he got up that morning that he could have the choice between one last swim with the stingrays and watching his two small children grow up, he probably would have been willing to never go in the ocean again.

They say that the most common fear we all have is the fear of death. No one really knows for sure what is beyond life. Some speculate that it is just nothingness. Other people have an understanding of paradise and hell – places of everlasting pleasure and suffering respectively.

But the point is none of us really knows for absolute certainty. Even the most sure are exercising a degree of faith because they have not seen it with their own eyes.

Perhaps the clearest picture of what happens after we die was given to us by Jesus. Here is what he said about the subject.

Jesus said, “There was a certain rich man who was splendidly clothed and who lived each day in luxury. At his door lay a diseased beggar named Lazarus. As Lazarus lay there longing for scraps from the rich man’s table, the dogs would come and lick his open sores. Finally, the beggar died and was carried by the angels to be with Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried, and his soul went to the place of the dead. There, in torment, he saw Lazarus in the far distance with Abraham.”The rich man shouted, `Father Abraham, have some pity! Send Lazarus over here to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in anguish in these flames.’

“But Abraham said to him, `Son, remember that during your lifetime you had everything you wanted, and Lazarus had nothing. So now he is here being comforted, and you are in anguish. And besides, there is a great chasm separating us. Anyone who wanted to cross over to you from here is stopped at its edge, and no one there can cross over to us.’

“Then the rich man said, `Please, Father Abraham, send him to my father’s home. For I have five brothers, and I want him to warn them about this place of torment so they won’t have to come here when they die.’

“But Abraham said, `Moses and the prophets have warned them. Your brothers can read their writings anytime they want to.’

“The rich man replied, `No, Father Abraham! But if someone is sent to them from the dead, then they will turn from their sins.’

“But Abraham said, `If they won’t listen to Moses and the prophets, they won’t listen even if someone rises from the dead.’ “

Jesus shows us there are two possibilities after death. Taken on its own this story might be interpreted to mean that rich people will never get to heaven and poor people are guaranteed a ticket in.

Steve IrwinBut that is not what Jesus is getting at here. The one who ended up in heaven read what the Bible had to say on the subject and took it to heart. The one who ended up suffering either chose not to read or read and didn’t believe.

The Bible is very clear on what is required for a person to “make it” into heaven. There is no reason for anyone to doubt. And we can face even death without fear.

The Bible explains it this way:

For God sent Jesus to take the punishment for our sins and to satisfy God’s anger against us. We are made right with God when we believe that Jesus shed his blood, sacrificing his life for us.

I can’t make it any clearer than that. I only hope that Steve Irwin chose to believe before he went swimming with the stingray this weekend.

Love Without the Squishiness

I pulled a book off my shelf this morning as a reference for an article I was writing. It is not at all a spiritual book. In fact it is a book about how to make money.

I only bought it because I heard the author speak at a conference one time years ago. I liked his story and what he had to say. In fact I caught up with him for a second afterwards to let him know that I appreciated what he had to say and he offered to sign my book.

Being a book guy I think it is pretty cool to have the author’s signature so I gladly handed my copy over for him to scratch his name in. Instead he wrote a short, personal little note. It took him maybe 30 seconds.

I’ve had that book 10 years now. No, I’m not a millionaire. But then I haven’t really applied many of the principles he wrote about, so I can’t pretend it is the fault of the book.

Regardless, today I picked it up from my shelf to look through it and I took a closer look at his note. At the end, after he signed his name, he put a scripture reference. Now I know I’ve looked it up before but I couldn’t remember what it said. So I looked it up again this morning.

And I was blown away. Here is the passage:

For this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom his whole family in heaven and on earth derives its name. I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

I’ve seen that passage before, especially the second paragraph. I talked about it a couple weeks ago in this post about Big Questions from Stepping in Something Squishy.

We say those words about God being able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine every week as we head out of church.

But until this morning for some reason I never associated them with the knowledge of how totally consuming and all encompassing the Love is that Jesus has for each of us.

Hazy SilhouetteThe Bible says that perfect love drives out fear. And I am dealing with a little bit of a fear issue as I start something new.

Perhaps God is trying tell me that I should put a little effort into understanding how much Jesus really loves me so that I can get a grip on the whole fear thing. Frankly the whole concept of “love” is one of those squishy things that I mostly don’t want to think about.

I’d honestly rather think about guy concepts like victory, conquering, overcoming, power – pretty much anything other than love. (You gotta read it with a sarcastic emphasis on the word love to get the full effect here.)

But maybe that is the basis of my fear thing I’ve got going on. Until I get over my infantile aversion to the concept of love (I can’t help the sarcasm yet. Sorry.) maybe I’ll never move forward.

So. As I go through the day today I am going to be thinking about Christ’s love for me. And I’ll work at not giggling or getting weirded out while I think about it. Because this whole fear thing is for the birds.

Were Hitler & Stalin Possessed?

OK, Here’s an article that could open up some discussion.

Apparently there is a priest over at the Vatican who is the Pope’s official “Caster Out of Demons” – Father Gabriele Amorth. And Father Amorth says that Hitler & Stalin were both possessed by the Devil.

What are your thoughts on that whole deal?

Got the Library Set Up!

Whoo-Hoooo!

It has been a long and somewhat painful process but the SucessCREEations Library is finally set up and ready to be filled with books.

Check out today’s post over there to see why I feel so strongly about reading being an important tool to achieve success.

That whole library thingy has taken up all my free time (of which I don’t have much) and a good chunk of my sleep time (which rarely seems enough) over the last few days to get the way I wanted it to be. I still have some tweaking to do. And of course I’ll have to add books to it.

But a recommended reading list is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. I just feel that it fits in better over there than it would here.

I should be back to my usual posting hi-jinx here at CREEations shortly. There sure is a lot to juggle with life, isn’t there?

In the mean time, keep a careful eye on Ernesto. He’s not much of a storm, probably won’t ever graduate to full hurricane (himmicane?) status. But he’s just enough to stir things up a little in my line of work. And his screwy course prediction has to be giving the professional weather guessers fits!

Anyway here’s to hoping your day is a wonderful experience.

Spam Attack

UPDATE: Apparently the spam problem wasn’t on my end at all. The program I use to get handle on it (Askimet) experienced down time. It happened to coincide with my updating to a newer version of WordPress. Go figure.

ProBlogger and BloggingPro both wrote about the problem this morning. I’m glad I wasn’t dealing with their traffic levels yet, eh? Scores of spam comments are relatively manageable compared to thousands!

Please bear with me. I’ve been having some technical issues over the last couple of days.

Part of my problem has been a spam attack here at CREEations. I normally get scores of spam comments every day here. I have a good safeguard that has been shutting them out cold.

They were all getting through like I had no protection at all. It was disconcerting.

At first I thought somehow the comment from Dot a couple days back might have something to do with it and I even considered deleting the comment finally to see if it would help.

But I think the problem had more to do with the fact that I just upgraded to the new version of WordPress, which is the core software which runs everything here at CREEations, at about the same time.

Somehow with the upgrade my anti-spam thingy forgot to come back online.

It took a while, but fortunately I think I resolved that issue finally. In the mean time I was frantically checking in ever couple of hours to delete the dozen or so viagra ads and such that were flooding my comments sections.

Oh, and I have been working to format an add-on Library function over at SuccessCREEations, so this weekend was busy behind the scenes. The Library is close to being ready to go live. Just a little more tweaking…

How Do You Respond When You’re Insulted?

Yesterday someone left an insulting anonymous comment here at CREEations. I had to think about how I responded.

My fist instinct was to simply delete the comment. Hey, it’s my blog. If you don’t like it, don’t read it. There are only about a hundred gazillion other websites and blogs out there. If you stumbled on my blog and don’t like it, hit the back button. Don’t insult me. Right?

But then I remembered that my only real policy here is to edit out profanity. Since the comment managed to steer clear of that even though it was insulting and hurtful, maybe deleting it wasn’t the right answer in this case.

Face SlapI could have simply ignored the comment and left it there. But that’s really never been my way.

I chose to respond. Keep in mind that I can be very sarcastic and cynical. In fact that is the way I usually respond to things in general. So I wrote a response that was rather harsh.

But Jesus said we should turn the other cheek. Listen to his words:

“But if you are willing to listen, I say, love your enemies. Do good to those who hate you. Pray for the happiness of those who curse you. Pray for those who hurt you. If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn the other cheek. If someone demands your coat, offer your shirt also. Give what you have to anyone who asks you for it; and when things are taken away from you, don’t try to get them back. Do for others as you would like them to do for you.”

That’s pretty strong stuff. Not much room for harsh sarcastic cynicism.

I deleted my first response.

And I’m not sure I really succeeded in purging my sarcasm from my second try.

So my question is how would you have handled it better?

Life Seasons

It is interesting how life seems to arrange itself into seasons. And like the seasons of each year, the seasons of our lives seem to have defining characteristics and eventually move on to a new and different season.

we move from through our lives in stages, each defined a little differently.

For the first two years here in Savannah I rarely had to work on a Sunday. In fact I was usually wanting a little more weekend work because I get paid a little extra for it.

The past few months our weekend work has picked up considerably. As a measure I’ve only been able to attend 2-½ church services in the past 8 weeks.

I know some folks would say that is still too much church.

But I think many of them would find that the church I go to is a little different than the image they have in their minds of what church is. And besides, I like being there. I even led the tech team for a while.

These days I seem to be working a lot on Sundays. I’m OK with that. My life priorities put my job ahead of church attendance.

Fortunately yesterday was one of the 2-½ that I could be there. It was good.

The tech team had one of their best days in a long time (they’ve been plagued with tripping circuit breakers and such). The band was rocking, but played songs some of us (slightly) older folks could sing along with. The message was spot on (as always). I felt connected with God. All in all it was a good day.

I’m looking forward to the end of this season of weekend work just like I’m looking forward to the end of our long hot summer.

Parties and Film School Projects

Gorgeous and I went to a party last night.

The couple hosting it called it a “Thanks for the Ride” party. They’ve been in town for about a year and were finally able to scrape together the means to buy an inexpensive reliable car. A year is a long time to go without one here in the Southeast. Mass transit isn’t as good as it is in some parts of the country, although Savannah’s got a decent bus system.

Well, let’s just say the CAT is better than most of the places I’ve lived in the Southeast anyway. I don’t really know how good it is. Because I have a car, which I’m grateful for.

Johnny Reb MovieThe highlight of the evening for me was that Peter gave us a preview of an early cut of his movie, Johnny Reb. It is his master’s thesis project at SCAD and it’s been a long time coming. Peter’s been working hard on it and even at this early stage it looks great.

One of the ladies at the party said from the back of the room, “Peter! It looks so real!

We all laughed when she said that. I’m not sure how Peter took it. But I know it was a compliment. I think she was expecting, since the movie was a film school project, that it would look like something I did with a cam-corder in the back yard.

However Peter really is a professional and it looks, well, like a movie. Its a short. But even so it tells a compelling story.

It cracks me up that he chose the American Civil War as the background of his story. He’s Swedish (His last name is Svensson.) Not what I would have thought he’d pick. But what do I know?

On the Set of Johnny RebI actually volunteered to help out a tiny bit behind the scenes. So I am especially excited to see the finished product. I even found a photo on his site that has me in it. I’m holding a reflector to get some more light onto the eyes of one of the lead actors in that shot. It was a fun experience to be able to “help out”.

I’ve watched movies for years and I never had any idea what when into creating the finished product. I still don’t have much of a clue how to make it all work. But at least now I can appreciate how much work is involved!

I think Peter’s off to a great start. I can’t wait to go see one of his blockbusters one day. Then I’ll get to say, “I knew Peter way back when he was in film school.”
